CHEMUNG COUNTY DEPARTMENT OF PUBLIC WORKS
TO HOST PUBLIC INFORMATION MEETING
FOR BRIDGE REPLACEMENT PROJECT
IN THE TOWN OF VETERAN, CHEMUNG COUNTY

April 3, 2025
4:30 p.m. to 7:00 p.m.
Town of Veteran Town Hall
4049 Watkins Road,
Millport, New York 14864

The Chemung County Department of Public Works will host a public information meeting from 4:30 p.m.
to 7:00 p.m. on Thursday, April 3 rd , 2025 pertaining to an upcoming project to replace the bridge carrying
Benjamin Road over Bulkley Creek in the Town of Veteran, Chemung County. The bridge is located east
of the Benjamin Road and E. Sullivanville Road (CR 15) intersection.
The informal, open-house style meeting will be held at the Veteran Town Hall, 4049 Watkins Road,
Millport, New York 14864. Preliminary project plans will be available for review and representatives from
the Chemung County DPW and their consultant, LaBella Associates, will be available to answer
questions. No formal presentation is planned.
The proposed project will replace the existing bridge, which was constructed in 1944 and has reached the
end of its service life, with a single-span bridge that will be supported on new abutments, that will
accommodate all legal loads, including buses and fire trucks, with improved bridge hydraulic
performance. The new bridge will be longer and wider than the original crossing and will be constructed in
accordance with modern design standards, enhancing safety and mobility for pedestrians and motorists
alike.
To reduce travel impacts during construction, it is planned that a portion of Benjamin Road will be
temporarily closed in the vicinity of the bridge, and an off-site detour will be utilized during the construction
of the new bridge. The project is currently in the preliminary design phase, with construction anticipated to
begin in 2026.
The open house is part of Chemung County DPW’s continuing effort to encourage public participation in
the development of transportation projects.
